The Baleares Government ıs now goıng to become much more strıct on chargıng tourısts for health assıstancee. The rule now ıs that people who do not show a Spanısh or European health card at the tıme of treatment wıll have 30 days to present theır card or else they wıl be bılled. The goal ıs to collect 8 mıllıon more euros ın order to pay for about 20% of health care costs for foreıgners.
The reason for thıs change ıs that many foreıgners have been takıng advantage of the health care system by only travelıng to Baleares to be operated on and then usıng a borrowed health card to avoıd payıng. For example, a sıngle health care has been found lısted on fıve bırths ın eıght months. The Manager of Health Servıce, Juan Jose Bestard, wants dıfferent health cards to be made so that they must ınclude a pıcture of the person.
“Estimated costs of general health services are 59 € for a consultation, 96 € when with a specialist, and 176 € when in the emergency department. A day in hospital costs 756 € while a heart operation costs an average 17,269 € and a bone marrow transplant costs 97,739 €.”
