Volunteerism in Spain

This wikileak is about the idea and practice of volunteerism and community service in Spain. Volunteerism is becoming more popular and common in Spain, however, historically very few people have participated in volunteer activities. This is mostly due to certain cultural differences and societal attitudes. The general attitude is these services should be provided by the government. According to the article "Instead of organizing discreet volunteer activities to "fill a perceived gap", many Spaniards might lobby for the government or a NGO to provide a needed social service" In addition, while the concert of volunteer work is understood and respected, very few individuals do it on a formal or regular basis. Mainly the populations who do volunteer are those interested in activism or as part of a religious organization.
